Lee Kwan Yew Tribute

A man is gone and the world is not left without a hole in its heart, not our world anyway. The news came this morning not as a shock but like a black lizard that you've been catching glimpses of all week - expected, but still horrific when revealed. I think the best of us are still trying to come to terms with it, as if there is somewhere to come to, as if there are terms.

I recall my mother telling me a few years ago, that the country would be in an uproar should LKY ever leave us. Some speculated that his death would cause chaos. I have never believed in that. A man like him, a legacy, many believe, would never leave behind his life's work to be denigrated. This is proven day after day in the lives that we lead.

There are a hundred and one things (heck, probably more) that we're probably disgruntled about here at home. But I think for today, most of us took a good look around us and felt humbled. Humbled and thankful, for all that our forefathers have worked so hard bring us here.

I've never been into politics and shamefully admit that I don't particularly concern myself with it; so perhaps, I don't know too much. And yes, LKY has his share of haters; not all of whom are empty vessels. But as a Singaporean, I believe in my heart, that he was a man who loved the country more than he loved himself. That is more than you can say about most people.

He will be remembered. No matter what the naysayers feel, he will always be revered. I'd not go so far to say that fervent hero-worship (that many have suddenly adopted since the news of his death) is called for, but this man is definitely worthy of our respect.

R.I.P LKY, thank you for giving us your life.
